Breast Abscess is an inflammation of breast tissue that sometimes involves an infection. The inflammation results in breast pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. You might also have a fever and chills. Breast Abscess most commonly affects women who are breast-feeding (lactation mastitis). But Breast Abscess can occur in women who aren’t breastfeeding and in men. Lactation mastitis can cause you to feel run down, making it difficult to care for your baby. Sometimes Breast Abscess leads a mother to wean her baby before she intends to. But continuing to breastfeed, even while taking an antibiotic to treat mastitis, is better for you and your baby.
Hepar Sulph is often used for acute abscesses that are painful, red, and swollen. It is indicated when the abscess is hot, tender, and throbbing, and when the person is very sensitive to touch or cold air.
Key symptoms: Inflamed, suppurating (pus-filled) abscesses, increased pain from pressure, and irritability.
Belladonna is helpful in the early stage of inflammation, where the abscess is red, swollen, and hot. It is used when there is a sudden onset of symptoms, with intense redness and throbbing pain.
Key symptoms: Sudden intense inflammation, redness, and warmth, with high fever and sensitivity to touch.
Pulsatilla is often indicated in women with sensitive, emotional natures who may have a tendency toward infections like abscesses. It is especially useful when the abscess seems to fluctuate, with some improvement from mild pressure or cold air.
Key symptoms: Changeable symptoms, abscess with a tendency to be soft or shifting, and mild tenderness.
Lachesis may be useful for chronic abscesses that are slow to heal and may present with a bluish or purple appearance. It is also indicated when there is a tendency to burst and drain, especially if there is a lot of discharge.
Key symptoms: Left-sided abscesses, skin discoloration, sensitivity to touch, and symptoms aggravated by heat.
Silicea is helpful in chronic abscesses that have a tendency to recur or are slow to heal. It also helps in situations where the abscess refuses to drain or “come to a head.”
Key symptoms: Hard, indurated (hardened) abscesses, pus that is thick and offensive, slow healing, and tendency to form scar tissue.
Bryonia is indicated for abscesses that are painful and aggravated by movement or touch. The pain may be sharp and the abscess may be hard, with no tendency to drain.
Key symptoms: Inflammation with intense pain, dryness, irritability, and a desire to stay still to avoid discomfort.
Calendula is often used topically (as a tincture or cream) to help promote healing of abscesses, especially once the abscess starts to drain or heal. It can be used to speed up the healing of the wound.
Key symptoms: Healing after suppuration, tissue regeneration, and promoting drainage of pus.
Mercurius is helpful for pus-filled abscesses with a foul-smelling discharge. It is often indicated when there is profuse sweating, chills, and a tendency for the abscess to spread or worsen.
Key symptoms: Abscesses with offensive pus, fever, and sweating, with the abscess being sensitive to touch.
Apis is indicated for swelling and inflammation where the abscess is painful, stinging, and burning. It is particularly useful when the abscess is tender to the touch and there is significant swelling without a lot of pus formation.
Key symptoms: Swelling, stinging pain, and symptoms aggravated by warmth, with improvement from cold applications.
Sulphur is used for chronic or recurrent abscesses, especially in individuals who are prone to skin infections or have a tendency to develop boils or other types of abscesses. It is helpful when the abscess seems to reappear in the same area.
