Infantile Colic refers to paroxysmal, severe, cramping abdominal pain in otherwise healthy infants, usually occurring within the first few months of life. It is characterized by persistent, inconsolable crying, often in the evening hours, and associated with drawing up of legs, abdominal distension, and flatus.
The condition typically appears around 2–3 weeks of age and resolves spontaneously by 3–4 months. The exact cause is uncertain but may involve intestinal immaturity, aerophagia (swallowed air), overfeeding, lactose intolerance, food sensitivities, or emotional tension in caregivers.
Although harmless and self-limiting, it causes great distress to both the infant and parents.
Homoeopathy offers safe, gentle, and effective management of infantile colic without side effects. The remedies are selected according to the nature of the cry, time of occurrence, behavior of the child, type of stool, and associated symptoms.
Homoeopathic treatment aims to relieve intestinal spasm, promote gas expulsion, and regulate digestion while simultaneously addressing the baby’s sensitivity, temperament, and feeding pattern.
Dietary guidance for the nursing mother—such as avoiding excessive coffee, spices, or gas-forming foods—is also essential to ensure lasting improvement.
The child is extremely irritable, angry, and cannot be pacified except when carried. Abdomen distended with rumbling and drawing up of legs. One cheek red and the other pale. Colic worsens after feeding and during teething.
Severe, cramping, twisting abdominal pain causing the infant to double up or press the abdomen with fists. Pain subsides when the abdomen is pressed or warmed. Often after anger or emotional tension in the mother.
Rolling pain before stool, relieved after evacuation. Stool frequent, profuse, watery, and offensive. Infant shows restlessness and exhaustion after stool.
Violent colic after feeding with vomiting of curdled milk. The child becomes drowsy, pale, and weak after vomiting. Excellent for infants who cannot digest milk properly.
Abdomen distended with gas; child cries from fullness and cannot pass flatus easily. Pain relieved after belching or passing gas. Especially indicated after overfeeding or improper digestion.
Sharp, cutting abdominal pain with drawing up of legs. Pain relieved by warmth, gentle rubbing, and firm pressure. Child feels better when abdomen is covered or pressed.
Persistent nausea and abdominal griping without relief from vomiting. Child looks pale, weak, and irritable. Useful when colic follows indigestible food or overfeeding.
Pain around navel with frequent desire to stool but no relief. Child restless, irritable, and cries soon after feeding. Useful for infants of mothers who take stimulants, coffee, or spicy food.
Child irritable, rubs nose, grinds teeth, and cries before stool. Abdomen bloated; stool with mucus or worms. Excellent for worm-related colic in children.
Abdominal pain after exposure to cold or damp conditions. Child’s body feels cold to touch. Warm wrapping relieves discomfort.
No natural urge to pass stool; even soft stool needs straining. Child cries before passing stool due to pain or difficulty.
Abdomen full, tight, and rumbling after feeding; much flatulence with relief after passing gas. Child appears weak and cries in the evening hours.
Pain worse at night with greenish, sour-smelling stools. Child restless, passes much gas, and is better from warmth and gentle rubbing.
Abdominal pain after taking fatty food or in warm rooms. Child weeps gently, wants to be carried, and feels better in cool, open air.
Colic with watery, hot stools during summer, accompanied by restlessness and irritability. Useful in heat-induced gastrointestinal disturbance.
Severe griping pain followed by coldness, collapse, and thirst for cold water. Pain relieved by warmth and gentle rubbing.
Infantile colic is a functional gastrointestinal disturbance caused by immature digestion or sensitivity to feeding patterns, not a serious disease.
Homoeopathic remedies, chosen according to individual symptom patterns and modalities, offer quick, safe, and gentle relief—restoring comfort without interfering with digestion.
Through constitutional treatment, regulated feeding, and maternal dietary care, homoeopathy ensures complete recovery and improved digestive resilience in infants.
Combined with warmth, patience, and parental reassurance, it provides a natural and holistic solution to colic in babies.
