Definition:Formication is an abnormal paresthesia (skin sensation) characterized by the feeling that insects or worms are crawling on or under the skin when none are present. It is a symptom rather than a disease and may occur due to neurological, psychological, or toxic causes.
Patients describe sensations of tingling, prickling, crawling, or itching, often leading to scratching, anxiety, and sleep disturbance. Chronic cases may cause excoriations and secondary skin infections.
Homoeopathy approaches formication by identifying the underlying cause — whether nervous, toxic, or emotional — and by restoring balance in the nervous system. Remedies are prescribed according to the individual’s constitutional symptoms, modalities, and causative factors such as anxiety, drug use, hormonal imbalance, or neuropathy.
Homoeopathic medicines act gently on the neurocutaneous system, helping relieve abnormal sensations and improving overall vitality and nerve function.
Sensation of ants or insects creeping under the skin, with twitching and trembling of muscles. Worse in cold weather and before storms. Suited to nervous, sensitive, and chilly individuals.
Burning and crawling sensation with intense restlessness and anxiety. Worse after midnight, from cold, and during weakness. Patient feels relief from warmth and is extremely fastidious and anxious.
Tingling, pricking, and crawling especially in legs at night. Better by motion, worse by rest. Associated with nervous exhaustion, twitching, and fidgety feet. Useful in peripheral neuropathies.
Crawling, tingling, or numbness in hands and feet. Worse from emotional stress or fasting. Better by cold food and lying on right side. Patient is sensitive, imaginative, and easily fatigued.
Crawling sensation with itching, offensive perspiration, and restlessness. Worse at night and from warmth of bed. Suitable for people with trembling, foul breath, and tendency to suppuration.
Formication as if insects are crawling on the face and arms, especially in cocaine or stimulant users. Associated with restlessness, sleeplessness, and anxiety.
Sensation of crawling, especially on left side or around genitals. Worse after sleep or from tight clothing. Common during menopause or hormonal imbalance. Suited to talkative, excitable women.
Crawling or pricking in hands and feet with chilliness. Patient is sensitive to cold air, timid, and weak. Helps chronic nerve irritations and promotes expulsion of toxins.
Numbness, tingling, and crawling with muscle retraction and weakness. Associated with motor paralysis or lead toxicity. Suitable for chronic neuropathic conditions.
Crawling and tingling with shriveled, cold skin and burning pains. Suited to thin, cachectic individuals or those with circulatory weakness.
Formication of skin and limbs, worse in old age or after nervous strain. Suited to nervous, bashful, weak individuals who feel worse from conversation.
Sensation of insects creeping on skin with constant desire to move or dance. Intense restlessness and emotional excitement. Relief from rhythmic motion.
Sensation of ants running over the skin with itching and burning. Worse from warmth and washing, better from scratching. Skin dry, unhealthy, and dirty-looking. Suited to hot-blooded, unkempt individuals.
Formication in hands and feet, especially in diabetics or exhausted persons. Accompanied by weakness, mental apathy, and indifference.
Formication and tingling due to nerve injury or trauma. The affected parts are extremely sensitive to touch. Useful for post-injury or post-surgical nerve irritation.
Crawling with dryness and cracking of skin. Worse at night and from warmth. Suited to obese, chilly individuals with tendency to eczema or oozing eruptions.
Crawling, tingling, or numbness as if limbs are asleep, especially before sleep. Suited to emotionally sensitive, reserved individuals who dwell on grief.
Formication with irritability, sleeplessness, and digestive disturbance. Useful for those addicted to stimulants or leading sedentary, stressful lives.
Crawling and tingling from nervous weakness or fright. Patient feels dull, drowsy, and tremulous. Suitable for post-infectious or emotional exhaustion cases.
Crawling and numbness in limbs with stiffness and weakness. Worse in cold, dry air, better in damp weather. Often indicated in chronic paralysis or nerve degeneration.
Formication represents a functional disturbance of sensory nerves, often linked to neuropathy, hormonal imbalance, drug effects, or psychological stress.
Homoeopathic remedies such as Agaricus, Zincum, Arsenicum, Phosphorus, and Lachesis address both the nerve dysfunction and the mental-emotional sphere, providing lasting relief without suppressing the symptom.
With constitutional treatment and correction of underlying causes, the abnormal crawling sensations subside gradually, restoring both nerve health and mental calm.
