Frozen Shoulder (also called Adhesive Capsulitis) is a painful and restrictive condition of the shoulder joint, characterized by stiffness, limited range of motion, and pain that worsens gradually.
It occurs due to inflammation and thickening of the joint capsule surrounding the shoulder (glenohumeral joint), leading to adhesions and decreased mobility. The condition commonly affects individuals between 40–60 years, and is more frequent in diabetics, post-injury cases, or after prolonged immobilization.
Stages of Frozen Shoulder:
Common Causes:
Autoimmune or inflammatory conditions
Diabetes mellitus
Shoulder injury or surgery
Immobilization of arm
Thyroid disorders
Homoeopathy aims to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and restore joint mobility by acting on the fibrous and synovial tissues of the shoulder joint. It not only addresses the local pathology, but also the underlying constitutional tendencies — such as metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalance, or suppressed inflammation.
Remedies are selected based on character, location, and modality of pain, along with the patient’s general constitution and mental state. Homoeopathic treatment helps in faster recovery and prevents recurrence or chronic stiffness.
Pain and stiffness of the shoulder, worse on beginning to move and after rest, better by continued motion or warmth. Common after exposure to damp cold or overuse of the arm. Indispensable remedy in rheumatic and adhesive joint conditions.
Severe pain in the shoulder radiating down the arm with numbness and weakness. Pain worse from motion and touch, better by gentle movement. Suitable for right-sided frozen shoulder and post-traumatic cases.
Pain and stiffness due to strain, overuse, or injury of tendons around the shoulder joint. Shoulder feels bruised and sore, worse from lifting or stretching. Excellent remedy for ligament and tendon involvement.
Drawing, tearing pain with great stiffness in shoulder and neck. Pain worse on cold exposure and at night, better from warmth. Suited to chronic or paralytic conditions with reduced mobility.
Pain and stiffness in the left shoulder, extending to neck and arm. Worse at night and on raising the arm. Shoulder feels dry and stiff. Often indicated in menopausal or rheumatic women.
Right shoulder sore, painful, worse from motion, and pressure. Helpful in early inflammatory stage of frozen shoulder. Reduces congestion and tenderness.
Stitching or tearing pain in the shoulder joint, worse from slightest motion and better by complete rest and pressure. Useful in acute inflammatory or early frozen stage with marked aggravation from movement.
Burning, tingling, or shooting pains in the shoulder and arm, with weakness. Worse from exertion, better from cold. Indicated in nervous, oversensitive constitutions.
Stiffness and aching in the shoulder aggravated by damp, cold exposure and relieved by warmth and motion. Useful in rheumatic or weather-sensitive individuals.
Severe neuralgic pain radiating from neck and shoulder down to the arm and hand. Associated with tingling, numbness, or weakness. Useful in cases linked to cervical spondylosis or nerve compression.
Hardness, stiffness, and fibrous changes in joint capsules and tendons. Slow recovery and chronic induration of tissues. Excellent for long-standing frozen shoulder and adhesive conditions.
Cramping and tearing pains in shoulder muscles, worse from cold and touch, better from warmth and pressure. Indicated where pain is neuralgic in character.
Frozen shoulder is a self-limiting yet functionally disabling condition. Homoeopathy offers effective management by addressing both local inflammation and systemic predispositions, ensuring sustained relief without dependence on steroids or painkillers.
Remedies like Rhus Tox, Bryonia, Causticum, Ruta, and Sanguinaria are particularly valuable in different stages of the condition.
Combining proper physiotherapy, gentle stretching, warm compress, and controlled blood sugar levels further accelerates recovery and prevents recurrence.
