Mouth ulcers (aphthous ulcers) are painful, shallow lesions occurring on the mucosal surfaces of the mouth such as inside the lips, cheeks, tongue, soft palate, and sometimes the gums. They arise due to mucosal breakdown and inflammation, often triggered by stress, minor trauma (biting), hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies (iron/B12/folate), hypersensitivity reactions, weak immunity, acidic foods, digestive disturbances, or systemic illnesses. Clinically, they appear as round or oval lesions with a yellowish base and red inflammatory border, causing pain while eating, drinking, and speaking. Although self-limiting, recurrent ulcers significantly affect quality of life.
Homoeopathy manages mouth ulcers by identifying the underlying sensitivity, digestive influences, stress factors, and the individual’s constitutional pattern. Medicines are chosen based on ulcer type (deep, superficial, white-based, yellow-based, bleeding, burning), location, triggers, modalities (better/worse), and accompanying symptoms such as salivation, taste changes, gastric issues, or emotional disturbances. Homoeopathy not only promotes faster healing but also reduces recurrence by strengthening the mucosal immunity and correcting internal imbalance.
Useful when ulcers are very sensitive, painful, and accompanied by salivation, bad breath, and metallic taste. Pain worsens at night with increased spit, and ulcers often appear on tongue and inner cheeks.
Indicated for frequently recurring small circular ulcers that burn and sting. Especially helpful for patients who get ulcers after slight irritations like brushing or biting the cheek.
Suitable for aphthae with white or grayish base and red borders. Pain is mild but persistent. Often associated with indigestion or sluggish liver function.
For deep, hard-edged ulcers that bleed easily and feel like a sharp splinter is stuck. Pain is stitching in nature. Suits individuals prone to constipation and fissures.
Burning pains, restlessness, and dryness accompany the ulcers. Even mild food irritates. Useful for weak, anxious individuals who are very sensitive to heat.
Painful, raw ulcers on tongue and gums with drooling, offensive breath, and swollen glands. Mouth feels hot, and the patient is very thirsty.
Indicated for ulcers due to gastric irritation, acidity, and lifestyle stress. Mouth feels dry in morning, and patient becomes highly irritable and sensitive to stimuli.
Especially useful for children who develop recurrent aphthae with extreme sensitivity to downward motion, like being carried downstairs. Ulcers bleed easily while eating.
When ulcers develop after grief, worry, or emotional upset. Pain is variable, and patient often sighs frequently, with lump-in-throat sensation accompanying oral discomfort.
Putrid, foul-smelling breath with irregular ulcers that tend to bleed. Pain is burning and gnawing, often worse at night.
Suits bright-red, erythematous ulcers with burning and stinging pains. Mouth feels swollen and sensitive to heat. Pain improves from cold water.
Indicated when ulcers and gums become extremely sensitive to touch, with sharp splinter-like pains. Patient feels chilly and oversensitive to cold air.
Mouth feels dry, hot, and ulcerated, making swallowing difficult. Tongue appears cracked or coated. Suitable during post-febrile weakness or viral stomatitis.
For pale, anemic individuals who develop mouth ulcers easily due to low immunity and nutritional deficiency. Pain is mild, but healing is slow.
Used when ulcers accompany gastric disturbances, acidity, and morning discomfort. Lips and mouth feel dry, while ulcers burn intensely, especially from warm drinks.
Indicated after dental work, irritation from sharp tooth edges, or biting trauma. Ulcers are painful, tender, and slow to heal. Suit gentle, sensitive individuals.
Speech becomes difficult due to painful ulcers that worsen from heat or after waking. Suited when symptoms predominantly affect the left side.
A remedy for weak, debilitated patients with poor healing capacity. Ulcers bleed easily, and mouth feels hot and sore with offensive breath.
Thick white-coated tongue with cracks, mouth irritation, and painful eating. Ulcers flare up after overeating or indigestion.
For recurrent aphthae associated with dryness of mouth, cracked lips, and dehydration. Ulcers burn especially while eating salty food.
Ulcers tender to slightest touch, with radiating nerve pain around cheek or jaw. Mouth feels sore, raw, and sensitive to temperature changes.
Mouth ulcers, though common, can be recurrent and distressing, especially when associated with digestive problems, stress, or nutritional deficits. Homoeopathy offers a gentle, individualized method to treat active ulcers while reducing frequency and severity of recurrences. Through constitutional treatment and targeted acute remedies, patients experience faster healing, better immunity, and reduced sensitivity of the mucosal surfaces.
