Polyps are abnormal, soft, fleshy growths arising from mucous membranes due to chronic inflammation, repeated irritation, hormonal imbalance, allergic reactions, or epithelial overgrowth. They can occur in the nose, colon, uterus, stomach, bladder, throat, or vocal cords. Depending on location and size, polyps may cause nasal obstruction, discharge, difficulty breathing, bleeding, altered smell, bowel changes, pelvic pain, or voice changes. Though most polyps are benign, long-standing or large polyps may obstruct passages, become infected, or undergo precancerous transformation, making early detection and long-term management crucial.
Homoeopathy considers polyps a result of chronic mucosal inflammation, constitutional weakness, suppressed infections, allergic tendency, and miasmatic predisposition. Remedies aim to shrink polyps, control discharge, prevent recurrence, reduce inflammation, and correct constitutional tendencies. Treatment is individualized, focusing on the specific sensations, modalities, discharges, location-based symptoms, and the patient’s overall constitution.
A feeling that the nose is filled with a soft, spongy mass, making breathing difficult, especially at night. The patient breathes through the mouth, feels heaviness at the bridge of the nose, and experiences poor airflow despite attempts to clear mucus. Damp, rainy weather worsens the obstruction.
Thick, sticky, ropy mucus that adheres to tissues and is difficult to expel. The patient feels pressure and heaviness between the eyes, with pain radiating to the forehead. Hawking, throat irritation, and postnasal drip are constant.
Progressive reduction or complete loss of smell due to deep nasal blockage. The patient describes an internal pressure, frequent catarrh, and repeated colds. A sensation as if a foreign body or soft mass is obstructing the inner nasal cavity.
The nasal mucosa bleeds easily, especially on slight blowing or touching. Warm weather and exertion trigger bleeding. Along with epistaxis, there is rawness, burning, and a metallic taste, with overall weakness and easy bruising.
Persistent runny nose with a sensation of swollen tissues inside the nostrils. The discharge increases in the morning or evening, accompanied by dryness of the throat and headaches from sinus congestion.
A foul, thick, yellow-green discharge that irritates the nostrils. Crusts form, causing pain on removal. Frontal heaviness, tiredness, and chronic catarrhal history are marked.
A subjective offensive odor that only the patient perceives. There is itching deep in the nose, frequent sneezing, crawling sensations, and a feeling of internal obstruction.
Nasal obstruction that alternates sides throughout the day. Thick, bland discharge, especially in the evening; relief in open, cool air and worsening in warm rooms. Chronic sinus tendency.
Sneezing fits, nasal itching, watery eyes, and swelling of nasal mucosa during allergic episodes. Mucosal swelling predisposes to polyp growth. Recurrent seasonal allergies are prominent.
Deep-seated sinus pain radiating to the eyes, forehead, and upper jaw. Thick mucus, recurrent infections, and chilliness are common. The patient feels blocked even after blowing the nose.
Large or multiple polyps cause persistent nasal obstruction, forcing the patient to breathe through the mouth. Loud snoring, fatigue, and frequent colds occur. The nose feels swollen internally, especially at night.
Irritated, ulcerated nasal mucosa with burning sensations. Thick saliva, offensive breath, increased sweating, and nighttime aggravation stand out. Nasal discharge alternates between watery and thick.
Dry mucosa cracks easily; crusts form repeatedly. The patient picks the nose unconsciously to remove crusts, which leads to bleeding. Burning, soreness, and excoriation around the nostrils are present.
Acute flare-up with throbbing, congestive headaches due to inflamed polyps. Heat, redness of face, and vertigo on bending are prominent. Sudden onset and intense symptoms guide this remedy.
Watery discharge turning thick over days. Sneezing fits, morning aggravation, and difficulty breathing through the nose. Long-term allergic rhinitis history common.
Offensive odor combined with boggy mucosa, thick discharge, and severe obstruction. This presentation is characteristic of large, soft, spongy polyps filling nasal cavities.
A sensation of tightness, choking, and fullness around the throat and nose. Symptoms worsen at night or after sleep, with constant need to swallow or clear the throat.
Nose feels filled with sharp, stinging pain on touch. Thick yellow discharge, sensitivity to cold air, and tendency to suppurate are prominent.
Polyps represent chronic mucosal inflammation and structural overgrowth. Homoeopathic medicines address the root cause, reduce mucosal swelling, shrink polyp size, relieve obstruction, and prevent recurrence by treating the constitution alongside local symptoms. Individualized remedies provide long-term improvement in breathing, discharge, headaches, and quality of life.
