Rectal prolapse is a condition in which part or the entire wall of the rectum slips out through the anal opening. It can be partial (mucosal) or complete (full-thickness) and may occur intermittently or persistently. Common causes include chronic constipation, straining during defecation, weak pelvic floor muscles, neurological disorders, or connective tissue weakness. Symptoms include a visible protrusion from the anus, discomfort, bleeding, mucus discharge, fecal incontinence, and a sensation of incomplete evacuation. Severe or untreated prolapse can lead to ulceration, infection, or further weakening of the anal sphincter.
Homoeopathy treats rectal prolapse by strengthening pelvic and sphincter muscles, improving tissue tone, alleviating discomfort, controlling associated bleeding or mucus discharge, and supporting bowel regulation. Remedies are individualized according to the degree of prolapse, frequency, associated pain, stool consistency, and constitutional characteristics. The goal is to prevent progression, enhance natural tissue support, and improve overall bowel function.
Rectal tissue protrudes primarily during straining. Often associated with constipation, incomplete evacuation, and frequent urging. Nux Vomica is indicated for prolapse in individuals with sedentary habits or chronic constipation.
Mucosal lining protrudes intermittently with a sensation of pressure and burning. Pain and discomfort increase after bowel movements. Aloe Socotrina is suited for mucosal prolapse with a dragging sensation.
Entire rectal wall slips out, often in elderly or debilitated individuals. Accompanied by fecal incontinence or frequent straining. Calcarea Carb strengthens connective tissue and supports pelvic muscles.
Straining on hard, dry stools causes prolapse. Sensation of incomplete evacuation persists. Alumina is indicated when prolapse occurs repeatedly with constipation.
Prolapsed tissue bleeds easily and may be tender. Sensation of soreness or heaviness accompanies defecation. Hamamelis aids vascular strengthening and tissue healing.
Mucus oozes from the protruded tissue with burning, stinging, and soreness. Ratanhia is indicated for painful mucous discharge and sensitivity during bowel movements.
Feeling of heaviness, dragging, or incomplete evacuation in rectum. Constipation may be mild to severe. Collinsonia strengthens pelvic floor and alleviates dragging sensations.
Prolapse occurs after frequent, loose bowel movements with straining. Podophyllum suits patients with alternating constipation and diarrhea contributing to prolapse.
Frequent mucosal or full-thickness prolapse accompanied by fecal incontinence. Sensation of weakness in anal sphincter. Sepia supports pelvic muscle tone and continence.
Itching, burning, and irritation in the anal region, worse after defecation or during the day. Sulphur suits chronic cases with recurrent prolapse and inflamed tissue.
Intermittent prolapse associated with straining during bowel movements, especially in malnourished or weak children. Kreosotum strengthens connective tissue and reduces recurrence.
Pain, soreness, and a feeling that stool remains in the rectum. Aesculus improves venous tone and relieves rectal discomfort.
Combined prolapse and internal hemorrhoids with bleeding, burning, and dragging pain. Arsenicum Album is indicated for inflammatory discomfort and weakness.
Rectum feels weak and prolapse episodes are triggered or worsened by cold or damp conditions. Rhus Tox supports tissue resilience and reduces spasmodic weakness.
Postpartum prolapse with dragging, soreness, and difficulty maintaining continence. Caulophyllum aids recovery of pelvic floor muscles.
Rectal tissue protrudes with simultaneous passage of gas. Nux Moschata strengthens sphincter function and reduces involuntary escape.
Dragging feeling in the rectum with generalized fatigue or weakness. Kali Carb supports connective tissue and nerve-muscle tone in chronic cases.
Prolapse worsens when sitting or during prolonged inactivity. Cicuta suits cases with neuralgia-like pain and discomfort on pressure.
Repeated episodes associated with constipation or straining. Natrum Mur helps tissue resilience and reduces recurrence tendency.
Rectal prolapse is a condition of weakened pelvic and anal support structures, often aggravated by straining, chronic constipation, or connective tissue weakness. Homoeopathy offers supportive management by improving muscle tone, relieving pain, controlling bleeding and mucus discharge, and enhancing bowel function. Individualized remedy selection based on prolapse type, associated symptoms, stool consistency, and constitutional factors can prevent recurrence, strengthen pelvic tissues, and improve quality of life.
