A sore throat (pharyngitis) is inflammation and irritation of the throat, commonly caused by viral infections like rhinovirus, influenza, and adenovirus, or bacterial infections such as Streptococcus pyogenes. Environmental irritants, allergies, acid reflux, vocal strain, and smoking may also trigger throat inflammation. Patients experience pain, burning, dryness, difficulty swallowing, swollen glands, hoarseness, and sometimes fever. Severe cases may involve tonsillar swelling, exudation, or radiating pain to the ears. Most cases are self-limiting but can become recurrent or chronic due to untreated infections or low immunity.
Homoeopathy individualises sore throat based on the nature of pain (burning, stitching, rawness), modalities (better/worse from cold, warm drinks, swallowing), associated symptoms (fever, congestion, ear pain), and the patient’s general constitution. Remedies target acute inflammation, recurrent tonsillitis tendency, sensitivity to weather, chronic mucosal weakness, and immune susceptibility. Homoeopathy not only relieves the acute throat pain but also prevents frequent recurrences by addressing underlying predispositions.
Intense burning as if hot water is passing over the throat. Patient is weak, anxious, and restless. Symptoms worsen at night, from cold air, and after cold drinks. Frequent sips of warm water relieve irritation. Throat feels raw with extreme exhaustion.
Sudden onset of bright-red throat, high fever, dry mucosa, and throbbing pain. Even slight swallowing causes sharp pain. Tonsils swollen and shining, with heat radiating from the throat. Pain extends to the ears when swallowing.
Each swallow causes stitching pain as if a splinter is lodged. Throat is dry, lips parched, and patient feels better by complete rest and warm drinks. Pain worsens from talking or movement.
Tenacious, ropy mucus adheres to throat, causing constant hawking. Ulcerated patches, post-nasal drip, and pain localized to a small spot. Worse in the morning and in cold weather.
Pain radiates to the ears, especially while swallowing. The throat feels burnt, dark-red, and the tonsils are swollen. Even warm drinks cause pain. Patient feels aching in body and general exhaustion.
Profuse salivation, offensive breath, swollen glands, and yellow-white patches on tonsils. Pain worse at night and from cold or warm drinks. Metallic taste in mouth. Perspiration is offensive.
Sharp, splinter-like pain as if a fish-bone is stuck. Throat extremely sensitive to cold air and cold drinks. Even slight exposure causes violent pain. Better by warm drinks and wrapping the throat.
Dry, burning throat after sudden exposure to cold wind. Anxiety, restlessness, and fear accompany symptoms. Early stage of acute inflammation with fever and dryness.
Left-sided throat pain extending to the right. Cannot tolerate anything tight around the neck. Pain worse on swallowing liquids compared to solids. Sensation of a lump or constriction.
Throat is pale with white or greyish patches. Pain shoots to the ears during swallowing. Thick mucus and blocked ears accompany symptoms. Excellent for follicular tonsillitis.
Raw, sore feeling in throat with hoarseness, especially in morning. Difficulty speaking, voice cracks. Pain improves with cold drinks but returns in the evening.
Emotional stress triggers throat symptoms. Constant sensation of a lump or plug that improves while swallowing solids. Throat feels tight with dry, tickling cough.
Starts on the right side and extends to the left. Worse from cold drinks and late afternoon. Tongue coated, digestive symptoms (gas, bloating) present. Pain worsens from warm food.
Mild, weepy patients needing open air. Throat pain changes sides, worse in warm rooms, better outdoors. Thick bland yellow mucus and dryness at night.
Enlarged tonsils, pain on swallowing, weakness of immunity, and extreme sensitivity to cold. Children who catch throat infections repeatedly. Glands swollen and hard.
Throat dryness, stitching pains, and tendency to crack at corners of mouth. Pain worse in the morning and from emotional suppression. Throat feels tight after crying.
Suitable for teachers, singers, and speakers. Rawness, hoarseness, and metallic sensation in throat. Pain worsens with talking or singing. Frequent need to clear throat.
Pain worse on first swallowing but improves with continued swallowing. Throat feels raw and hot. Better from warm drinks. Often caused by getting wet or sudden temperature changes.
Burning and stinging pain with swollen, shiny, oedematous tonsils. No thirst despite dryness. Pain worse from warm drinks and better from cold applications.
Child constantly swallowing saliva due to throat irritation. Irritable, sensitive, grinding of teeth. Throat feels itchy and dry but swallowing aggravates.
Sore throat presents with diverse clinical expressions depending on the type of pain, inflammation, mucosal condition, and triggers. Homoeopathy offers targeted remedies that match the exact throat sensation, modalities, and constitutional tendencies, providing relief and preventing recurrence. Individualized treatment improves immunity, reduces inflammation, and supports long-term respiratory and ENT health.

A sore throat is commonly caused by viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies, cold weather, or dry air.
Throat pain, dryness, difficulty swallowing, swollen tonsils, and hoarse voice are common symptoms.
Warm water gargles, honey, plenty of fluids, rest, herbal tea, and steam inhalation can provide relief.
Antibiotics are only needed if the sore throat is caused by a bacterial infection. Viral sore throats do not require antibiotics.
Seek medical help if the sore throat lasts more than a week, is very severe, has high fever, or makes breathing or swallowing difficult.
