A stye (sometimes spelled sty) is a painful red bump on the edge of your eyelid. It can look similar to an acne pimple. A stye forms when a tiny oil-producing gland in your eyelash follicle or eyelid skin becomes blocked and gets infected. The medical term for a stye is a hordeolum.
There are two types of styes:
External styes. These form on the outer part of either the upper or lower eyelid. External styes are the most common type and are usually caused by an infection in your eyelash follicle.
Internal styes. They form on either of your inner eyelids (facing your eyeball). An internal stye is usually caused by an infection in the inner eyelid gland that produces oils that help keep your eyelid moist.
A stye is similar to another eyelid bump called a chalazion. A chalazion is a bump that usually occurs farther back on your eyelid. Unlike a stye, a chalazion usually isn’t painful and isn’t caused by a bacterial infection. But treatment for both conditions is similar.
Pulsatilla is one of the most commonly used remedies for eye styes, especially when the sty is painful, swollen, and red with a tendency to weep. It is indicated when the person experiences a lot of discharge from the affected eye and the sty is relieved by fresh air.
Key symptoms: Painful, swollen eyelids with yellowish discharge, especially when there is a tearing sensation or crustiness around the eyes. The person may be emotionally sensitive, cry easily, and seek comfort in cool environments.
Hepar Sulph is highly effective when there is a tender, inflamed sty that is extremely painful and sensitive to touch. It is also helpful when the sty is pus-filled or when the person feels like the infection is about to burst.
Key symptoms: Severe, throbbing pain in the affected eyelid with redness and swelling. There is a sensation of heat and tenderness, and the person may be highly irritable or sensitive. It is often indicated when the sty is suppurating and there is pus formation.
This remedy is useful for sty caused by infection with Staphylococcus bacteria, which is a common cause of eye styes. It’s particularly useful for those whose stye is hard, painful, and persistent.
Key symptoms: Hard, red, swollen sty that is painful to the touch. There may also be a yellow discharge from the eye, and the swelling is often persistent or recurrent. The individual may experience increased sensitivity in the affected area.
Mercurius is indicated when there is swelling and pain in the eyelid, with a tendency for the sty to be discharging and pus-filled. It works well when there is an accompanying inflammation and heat, and the eye feels as if there is foreign matter in it.
Key symptoms: Swelling of the eyelid with pus-filled discharge and a throbbing pain that worsens at night. The eye may be watery, and the person might feel generally unwell with sweats or a metallic taste in the mouth.
Calcarea Fluorica is useful for people who have chronic or recurrent styes. It is indicated when the sty feels hard and lumps form in the eyelids, often due to poor drainage or blocked glands.
Key symptoms: Hard, swollen, and sometimes painless lumps in the eyelid. The person may also experience chronic eyelid inflammation or frequent recurrence of styes, often with a history of clogged glands or poor circulation.
Graphites is useful for styes that occur alongside dryness or crusty secretions around the eyes. It is also effective when there is a lack of healing or slow recovery after the sty has formed.
Key symptoms: Dryness, itching, or crustiness of the eyelids, often accompanied by thick, sticky discharge. The person may also experience scabs or crusting on the eyelashes and a slow healing process.
Sulphur is helpful when the sty is associated with itching and burning sensations in the eyelids. It is also indicated in cases where the sty is recurrent, and the person has a tendency to develop other skin eruptions or infections.
Key symptoms: Burning, itching, or stinging pain in the eyelid with redness and swelling. The person may also experience increased sensitivity to heat and a tendency to develop other skin conditions, such as eczema or acne.
Belladonna is indicated when the sty comes on suddenly with intense redness, heat, and swelling. It is often accompanied by throbbing pain and sensitivity to touch.
Key symptoms: Intense, throbbing pain in the swollen eyelid with increased heat and redness. The person may also experience sensitivity to light and feeling worse from warmth. Belladonna is particularly useful for acute cases with rapid onset of symptoms.
Silicea is indicated for sty that is slow to mature and painful. It is often used when the sty is deep-seated, hard, and non-purulent, or when it is recurrent.
Key symptoms: Hard, painful lump in the eyelid that fails to mature or drain properly. There may be recurrent styes, and the individual may experience feeling cold or weakness. Silicea is also helpful when there is poor pus drainage.
Echinacea is a herbal remedy commonly used in homeopathy for infections and to support the immune system. It is helpful in preventing the spread of infection and reducing swelling in cases of eye styes.
Key symptoms: Swelling, redness, and pain around the eye with pus formation. Echinacea helps to boost immunity and reduce the risk of infection spreading, especially when the sty is caused by bacterial infection.
