Colic refers to severe, spasmodic, and cramping pain in the abdomen, often caused by spasm or obstruction in the hollow viscera such as the intestines, ureters, gallbladder, or uterus. The pain is typically intermittent, coming in waves, and may be associated with nausea, distension, flatulence, or restlessness.
Depending on the origin, colic may be intestinal, biliary, renal, or uterine. In infants, colic often appears as abdominal discomfort with crying and drawing up of legs, usually due to gas, improper feeding, or immature digestion.
Common causes include indigestion, flatulence, constipation, infection, worms, gallstones, renal calculi, or emotional stress. The pain may shift location, and relief often comes after passing gas, stool, or urine.
In homoeopathy, colic is treated by identifying its underlying cause, location, and modalities of pain (aggravation and amelioration factors). The nature of the pain—cramping, twisting, cutting, or shooting—and the patient’s emotional and physical state guide the selection of the remedy.
Homoeopathic medicines act by relieving smooth muscle spasm, improving digestion, and regulating peristaltic activity. Remedies are chosen not merely for pain relief but to correct the functional imbalance responsible for recurring colic.
For infants, gentle and safe remedies provide quick comfort without suppressing the natural digestive function. Dietary moderation and regular bowel habits aid recovery and prevent recurrence.
Severe, cramping, twisting abdominal pain causing the patient to bend double or press the abdomen firmly. Pain relieved by warmth or hard pressure. Often follows anger, indignation, or emotional stress.
Abdomen full, distended, and sensitive to touch; flatulence difficult to expel. Colic after loss of fluids, blood, or exhaustion. Better by bending double and after passing gas.
Pain causes restlessness, irritability, and screaming. One cheek red and the other pale. Especially in infants during dentition or after improper feeding. Pain relieved by being carried or rubbed.
Spasmodic, cramping, neuralgic abdominal pain relieved by warmth, pressure, or bending double. Particularly effective for menstrual and flatulent colic.
Abdomen full of gas with extreme distension and belching. Patient feels faint, cold, and desires air. Pain worse from lying down; better from eructation.
Tight, constricting pain around umbilicus with urging to stool or ineffectual desire. Pain worse after eating, stimulants, or mental strain. Suited to sedentary, irritable individuals.
Rolling pain before stool, relieved after passing it. Stool watery, profuse, or offensive. Abdomen sore and distended. Especially useful for infantile or diarrhoeic colic.
Cramping abdominal pain after getting wet or chilled. Associated with diarrhoea or suppressed perspiration. Pain relieved by warmth.
Pain worse in the afternoon and evening, with great bloating and fullness after small meals. Flatulence passes downward with relief. Suitable for right-sided complaints and weak digestion.
Persistent nausea with cramping abdominal pain. Tongue clean; vomiting does not relieve. Common in children after overeating or indigestible food.
Pain aggravated by motion and relieved by rest or pressure. Stools dry and hard as if burnt. Useful in constipation-related colic or after exposure to heat.
Cutting or shooting pain radiating from kidney to bladder or thighs. Frequent urging to urinate, with burning and bubbling sensations. Pain radiates in all directions.
Sharp pain under right scapula or hypochondrium with nausea and vomiting of bile. Liver region tender. Pain relieved by warmth or pressure.
Twisting abdominal pain, worse from bending forward and better by bending backward. Infant screams with pain, drawing legs up. Excellent for spasmodic intestinal pain.
Child restless, irritable, rubs nose, and grinds teeth. Colic around navel with itching at anus. Pain relieved after passing worms.
Violent griping pain with cold sweat, nausea, and collapse. Great thirst for cold water. Pain relieved by warmth and pressure.
Cramping pain in abdomen following grief, anxiety, or emotional suppression. Frequent sighing and changeable moods. Pain better from pressure.
Violent colic in children with vomiting of curdled milk. Child exhausted and drowsy after attack. Excellent for milk indigestion.
Pain low in the abdomen with pressure in rectum or sacrum. Associated with piles or pelvic congestion.
Colic represents pain from muscular spasm or irritation of abdominal viscera, often functional rather than structural.
Homoeopathic medicines provide gentle yet rapid relief by relaxing smooth muscles, easing spasm, and correcting digestive disturbances without suppressing symptoms.
By tailoring remedies to the individual’s pain pattern, causation, and constitution, homoeopathy not only relieves acute pain but prevents recurrence through deeper regulation of gastrointestinal and nervous functions.
Proper dietary discipline, warmth, and rest complement the action of remedies, ensuring safe and holistic recovery from both acute and chronic colic.
