Constipation is a condition characterized by infrequent, difficult, or incomplete evacuation of the bowels. Normally, bowel movement frequency varies among individuals, but fewer than three evacuations per week or hard, dry stools are generally considered constipated states.
It results from intestinal hypomotility, inadequate dietary fiber, dehydration, sedentary habits, suppression of the urge to defecate, or secondary causes like hypothyroidism, chronic illness, medications, and neurological disorders.
Chronic constipation may lead to abdominal discomfort, flatulence, headache, hemorrhoids, fissures, and a sense of incomplete evacuation.
Homoeopathy views constipation not merely as a bowel disorder but as a functional disturbance of the entire organism. The aim is to treat the underlying cause—whether dietary, emotional, or metabolic—through constitutional correction.
Remedy selection depends on the type of stool, frequency, accompanying symptoms, temperament, and causative factors. Homoeopathy restores the natural rhythm of bowel movement by improving intestinal tone, peristalsis, and nerve regulation.
Proper hydration, fiber-rich diet, and regular habits are encouraged along with remedy administration to achieve lasting cure.
Frequent, ineffectual desire for stool with small, unsatisfactory evacuation. Patient feels constant urging but passes little at a time. Suited to sedentary, irritable, overworked individuals, especially after stimulants, alcohol, or heavy food.
Stool large, dry, and hard as if burnt. Bowel movements cause great straining. Patient is extremely dry—mouth, lips, and tongue—and prefers absolute rest. Constipation from lack of fluids or inactivity.
Absolute inactivity of the rectum with no desire for stool even after several days. Stools, when passed, are hard, round, black balls. Common in elderly, bedridden, or post-surgical patients.
Even soft stools require great effort; no natural desire to pass stool. Marked dryness of mucous membranes. Common in elderly or those with sluggish bowels.
Constipation with morning urging, incomplete evacuation, and burning at the anus. Patient is warm-blooded, lazy, and unclean. Often alternates with loose stools. Excellent for chronic, habitual constipation.
Stool large, hard, and knotty, followed by burning pain and fissures. Constipation with eczema, obesity, or hormonal imbalance. Patient is chilly, constipated, and emotionally sensitive.
Constipation with flatulence, bloating, and right-sided abdominal discomfort. Stool passes only after great straining. Suited to individuals with digestive weakness, craving for sweets, and intolerance to tight clothing.
Stool hard, pale, and difficult to pass. Useful for sluggish bowels in children, pregnant women, and flabby, chilly individuals. Stool may appear like balls, with great effort and fatigue afterward.
Constipation alternating with normal or loose stool. Stool dry, crumbly, difficult to expel. Patient is reserved, sensitive, and prone to headaches or fissures.
Chronic constipation with stool hard, crumbling, and difficult to expel. Frequent urging without relief. Liver sluggishness and abdominal distension common.
Marked inactivity of rectum and spasm of colon. Stool hard, black, and pellet-like with colicky pain and retraction of abdomen. Useful in chronic neurological or toxic cases.
Sense of weight or ball in rectum, with inactivity of bowel. Suited to women with hormonal imbalance, prolapse, or bearing-down sensation. Constipation worsens before menses.
Hard stool followed by mucus discharge and gas. Coated white tongue, dislike of being observed, and indigestion after overeating. Suited to corpulent individuals with sluggish bowels.
Dry, hard stool passed with great pain and fullness in rectum as if packed. Associated with piles and burning soreness. Useful in portal congestion and hemorrhoidal tendencies.
Stool partially expelled and slips back. Great effort required. Useful in weak, chilly individuals with nervous exhaustion and rectal inertia.
Stool dry, crumbling, passed with strain. Aggravated in damp weather. Associated with hepatic sluggishness or bilious temperament.
Constipation alternating with loose stool. Eruptive skin conditions often accompany. Improves bowel tone and rectal circulation.
Irregular stool pattern, with no two days alike. Patient has no thirst, mild temperament, and feels better in open air. Useful for constipation in women due to hormonal changes or dietary upset.
Stool difficult, incomplete, or alternating with diarrhoea. Rectal weakness and prolapse common, especially in children or aged. Acts on portal system and regulates intestinal tone.
Constipation reflects functional derangement of digestion, nervous regulation, or systemic sluggishness, not just a mechanical obstruction.
Homoeopathic treatment, being individualized and constitutional, restores bowel rhythm and digestive vitality by correcting the underlying imbalance.
Through remedies tailored to stool character, causation, and patient constitution, homoeopathy ensures gentle, natural regulation of bowel movement.
Coupled with adequate hydration, fiber intake, physical activity, and regular habits, it offers permanent and holistic relief from chronic constipation.
