Hives, or Urticaria, is a hypersensitivity skin disorder characterized by raised, itchy, red or white wheals that appear suddenly and may shift location within hours. It is caused by histamine release from mast cells, leading to vasodilation, edema, and inflammation of the dermis.
Triggers include allergic reactions (to food, drugs, insect bites), infections, stress, cold, heat, pressure, or idiopathic factors. Acute urticaria lasts less than six weeks, while chronic cases persist longer and often have autoimmune or idiopathic origins.
Symptoms may include intense itching, burning, and swelling that worsens at night or after scratching. In severe cases, angioedema may occur, causing swelling of lips, eyelids, or throat, which can be life-threatening.
Homoeopathy treats urticaria by addressing the underlying hypersensitivity and immune imbalance, aiming to reduce itching, burning, and recurrence. Remedies are chosen based on cause, appearance of eruptions, modalities (better/worse from cold, heat, pressure, etc.), and associated systemic symptoms.
Homoeopathy not only relieves acute attacks but also modulates the immune response, reducing the tendency for repeated outbreaks and improving overall skin and systemic health.
Hives with stinging, burning, or smarting pain, accompanied by swelling or puffiness, respond excellently to Apis Mellifica. The patient feels worse from heat or touch and better from cold applications.
Hives appearing after exposure to cold air or damp weather, with itching and eruptions on covered parts, respond to Dulcamara.
Eruptions accompanied by burning, anxiety, and restlessness, often worse at night and from cold, respond to Arsenicum Album.
Hives triggered by grief, emotional upset, or shock, often recurring after mental strain, respond to Ignatia Amara.
Eruptions following overeating, spicy food, alcohol, or digestive upset, with acidity and irritability, respond to Nux Vomica.
Persistent hives with thickened, dry skin and oozing eruptions, especially around folds, respond to Graphites.
Severe, spreading hives with marked swelling of face, lips, or eyelids, and a tendency to congestion or flushing, respond to Lachesis Mutus.
Itching, burning eruptions aggravated by warmth, bathing, or at night, respond to Sulphur. Useful for chronic and recurring urticaria.
Hives appearing after overeating or indigestion, with white-coated tongue and nausea, respond to Antimonium Crudum.
Hives with itching, burning, and restlessness, worse by cold, damp, or during sweating, respond to Rhus Toxicodendron.
Eruptions following exertion or exposure to sunlight, especially on covered parts, respond to Natrum Muriaticum.
Raised, red, burning wheals after allergic reaction, stings, or shellfish intake respond well to Urtica Urens. It is one of the most specific remedies for acute urticaria.
When itching alternates with tingling or prickling sensations, especially from cold exposure, Agaricus Muscarius is indicated.
Women with hormonal imbalance, irregular menses, or hot flushes developing urticaria respond to Sepia.
Eruptions accompanied by nausea or gastric irritation, especially after eating seafood or fatty food, respond to Ipecacuanha.
Severe urticaria with burning and rawness, worsened by touch and associated with burning urine or inflammation, respond to Cantharis.
Eruptions that appear on pressure sites, like waistband or straps, with dryness and itching, respond to Bryonia Alba.
Chronic urticaria with aggravation from dampness and after sweating responds to Natrum Sulphuricum.
Urticaria resulting from vaccination, medication, or suppressed eruptions responds to Thuja Occidentalis.
Hives (Urticaria) represent a hypersensitive immune response often triggered by allergens, stress, or environmental changes. Homoeopathic treatment provides effective, individualized relief by addressing both acute outbreaks and chronic tendencies, balancing the immune and endocrine systems. Remedies such as Apis Mellifica, Urtica Urens, Dulcamara, Sulphur, Nux Vomica, and Arsenicum Album are frequently indicated.
Homoeopathy offers a gentle and lasting cure, helping to control itching, reduce recurrence, and restore skin health without suppressing symptoms or causing dependency.
