Polymyositis is a chronic inflammatory myopathy characterized by progressive, symmetrical weakness of proximal muscles such as shoulders, thighs, hips, and neck flexors. It results from autoimmune-mediated destruction of muscle fibers, leading to difficulty climbing stairs, lifting arms, rising from a seated position, swallowing issues, and muscle tenderness. Patients may also experience fatigue, shortness of breath, joint pain, and elevated muscle enzymes. Over time, it may cause severe mobility limitations, respiratory muscle weakness, and complications involving the heart and lungs.
Homoeopathy focuses on reducing autoimmune inflammation, improving muscle tone, restoring mobility, and slowing disease progression. Medicines are customised based on modalities like worsening from exertion, morning stiffness, muscle tearing pains, swallowing difficulty, or fatigue from minimal activity. Constitutional prescribing and long-term individualized treatment help prevent relapses, support immune regulation, and provide significant functional improvement.
Marked stiffness and weakness of thigh and hip muscles on first movement. Pain worse after rest, better with continuous motion. Muscles feel strained or sprained, as if overused.
Whole-body muscle soreness “as if beaten.” Even light activity aggravates. Cannot tolerate pressure on affected muscles. Very helpful in inflammatory flare-ups.
Weakness with stretching and tearing pains. Difficulty lifting arms or rising from a chair. Muscles feel tight, rigid, and contracted. Suited for long-standing myopathies.
Inflammatory muscle aches and weakness aggravated by cold exposure or sudden weather change. Patient feels heavy, sluggish, and strained.
Muscles twitch, jerk, or spasm involuntarily. Weakness follows the spasms. Worse cold, better gentle warmth. Sensation of icy coldness in extremities.
Total muscular prostration. Patient feels heavy, trembling, unable to perform any physical task. Eyelids may droop, limbs feel powerless, and movements slow.
Muscle fibers feel strained, torn, or overstretched. Sluggish healing of muscle injuries. Suitable for chronic, degenerative cases with notable muscle wasting.
Muscle pain aggravated by slightest movement, relieved by rest. Difficulty lifting arms, turning body, or walking. Affected muscles feel hard and tense.
Extreme fatigue and burning muscle pains. Weakness increases with slightest exertion. Restlessness and anxiety accompany physical symptoms.
Muscles feel weak, tired, trembling, and sensitive. Difficulty rising from sitting, climbing stairs, or lifting objects. Great weakness after minor effort.
Particularly suited when pharyngeal or respiratory muscles are affected. Left-sided complaints, hot flushes, and choking sensation while swallowing.
Weakness especially in lower limbs. Patient tires easily, perspires excessively, and struggles with fast walking or climbing. Suited for overweight, sluggish individuals.
Sharp neuralgic extension of muscle inflammation. Tingling, numbness, and shooting pains accompany muscle weakness.
Muscles cramp on exertion, with spasmodic contraction and irritability. Extremely sensitive to cold, noise, or mental strain. Worse early morning.
Worsening weakness from emotional stress. Difficulty maintaining posture, walking long distances, or lifting objects. Muscles feel stiff and heavy.
Muscular exhaustion from minimal activity. Trembling, soreness, and tiredness with weakness felt more in the evening. Good for chronic inflammatory weakness.
Stiffness, numbness, and weakness with shooting pains from neck to shoulders and arms. Motion initially painful but improves gradually.
Weakness after standing, walking, or light exertion. Burning in soles and general heat in body. Suits chronic, recurrent autoimmune myopathies.
Progressive muscular paralysis beginning in thighs and ascending upward. Difficult walking, climbing, or initiating movement. Slow, difficult recovery.
Deep muscle soreness, especially after exertion or strain. Good for chronic inflammation and slow-healing muscle tissues.
Polymyositis is a complex autoimmune inflammatory myopathy requiring long-term management. Homoeopathic remedies help reduce inflammation, strengthen weakened muscle groups, improve mobility, and slow progression by addressing the individualized pattern of weakness, tenderness, and fatigue. When combined with physiotherapy, immune regulation, and lifestyle support, homoeopathy provides significant relief, improved muscle function, and reduction in relapse frequency.
