Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disorder characterized by accelerated turnover of skin cells, leading to thickened, scaly, erythematous plaques. It can affect any part of the body but is commonly seen on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. The disease is associated with itching, burning, and sometimes pain. Psoriasis may vary in severity, from small localized patches to widespread involvement, and can be triggered or worsened by stress, infections, trauma (Koebner phenomenon), or certain medications. Psoriasis is often associated with systemic conditions such as arthritis, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease.
Homoeopathy treats psoriasis by addressing the underlying chronic miasmatic tendencies, immune dysregulation, and constitutional susceptibility. Remedies aim to reduce inflammation, normalize skin cell turnover, relieve itching and burning, and prevent recurrence. Selection is individualized based on lesion characteristics, modalities, mental and emotional symptoms, family history, and overall constitution.
Thick, dry, scaly plaques with deep cracks and fissures. Itching worsens at night or from warmth. Skin may ooze sticky fluid when scratched. Graphites is indicated in chronic, slow-healing, cracked, and sticky eruptions with itching.
Burning sensation in lesions, especially at night or from cold applications. The patient feels restlessness and anxiety. Skin appears dry, with fine scaling, and lesions may spread rapidly.
Small pustules develop on erythematous skin, often with tenderness. The patient may feel cold, sensitive, and irritable. The pustules are prone to rupture and leave raw, painful areas.
Thick crusts or “tree-bark” scaling on the scalp with intense itching. Hair may fall out in patches. Burning, soreness, and sticky exudates are common. Thuja is indicated when there is a tendency for warts, eruptions, or chronic skin thickening.
Red, inflamed plaques with burning and stinging sensations. Scratching provides temporary relief. Skin lesions are worse from cold, dampness, or at night.
Severe scaling and fissuring of soles and palms, sometimes bleeding. Pain worsens on walking. Mezereum suits patients with thick crusts, intense itching, and hyperkeratotic lesions.
Bright red, small, round lesions scattered over the body. Intense itching, burning, and dryness are present. Sulphur is indicated in patients with chronic skin complaints, warmth aggravation, and scratch marks that worsen at night.
Nail pitting, ridges, thickened or crumbling nails. Associated joint stiffness or pain may be present. Causticum is helpful when lesions are chronic and slowly progressive.
The skin becomes raw from scratching, with oozing and thick crusts. Scratching worsens the itching, especially at night. Patient may feel restless and sleepless.
Lesions flare after grief, anxiety, or emotional trauma. Itching and burning worsen at night or in bed. Patient may be irritable, tearful, or sensitive to external stimuli.
Thickened skin over joints with deep cracks, particularly in palms, soles, elbows, or knees. Painful fissures may bleed. Sensitivity to cold or damp weather is common.
Lesions are itchy and dry. Warmth temporarily relieves discomfort. Crusting may appear on the scalp, face, or limbs. Patients may have a history of suppressed eruptions.
Chronic lesions with slow healing. Nails may be brittle or deformed. Slow growth of lesions and tendency for repeated infections are characteristic.
Severe burning in plaques, worse at night, with restlessness and anxiety. Lesions may appear in eruptions that progress rapidly but leave dry, scaly skin behind.
Hyperkeratotic plaques with fissures, painful walking or gripping, sometimes associated with pustular eruptions. Aggravation from cold and dampness.
Pustular or weeping lesions that are extremely tender. Pain and soreness prevent normal movement or contact with clothing.
Lesions are recurrent, resistant to ordinary treatment, with thick crusting and dry scaling. Sometimes associated with warty outgrowths and scalp involvement.
Inflamed plaques on elbows, knees, or back, burning and stinging sensations, itching worse at night. Aggravated by damp weather or cold exposure.
Multiple small, round, bright red plaques with itching and scaling. Patient may feel warm and restless, often scratching at night.
Chronic thickened plaques with cracking, oozing, or hard crusts. Itching and burning are present; skin may be sticky or moist in fissures. Slow healing, chronic recurrence, and night aggravation are prominent.
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that requires constitutional and local management. Homoeopathic remedies aim to reduce inflammation, normalize skin cell turnover, relieve itching and burning, and prevent recurrence. Individualized treatment based on lesion type, chronicity, constitutional features, and mental-emotional factors provides long-term relief and improves quality of life.
