Scabies is a contagious parasitic skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It manifests primarily as intense itching, especially at night, with burrows, papules, vesicles, or crusted lesions. Commonly affected areas include finger webs, wrists, elbows, axillae, waistline, genital region, and scalp. Transmission is mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact, though contaminated clothing and bedding may rarely spread the infestation. Scratching often leads to excoriations and secondary bacterial infections, which can complicate the condition.
Homoeopathy treats scabies by addressing the totality of the patient’s symptoms—physical, emotional, and mental—rather than targeting the mite alone. Remedies are selected based on modalities, lesion characteristics, intensity of itching, and constitutional tendencies. The aim is to relieve itching, heal eruptions, prevent secondary infections, and reduce recurrence, providing a gentle, holistic, and permanent approach.
Patients scratch incessantly at night, often causing burning and raw skin. Lesions are red, excoriated, and sometimes oozing. Sulphur is indicated for restless patients whose itching worsens from warmth of bed covers.
Fine linear burrows in finger webs and wrists with papular eruptions and crust formation. Useful in chronic or thickly crusted scabies, especially with oozing lesions.
Itching leads to agitation and irritability. Patients often scratch until bleeding occurs. Graphites is indicated when skin is dry, rough, and fissured.
Intense nocturnal itching with vesicular eruptions, restlessness, and burning sensations. Lesions are red, inflamed, and ooze clear fluid.
Severe itching with restlessness and anxiety, worse in the evening and from cold. Excoriated lesions with burning pain are typical.
Deep-seated eruptions with intense itching and secondary infection. Skin may appear thickened or crusted; oversensitivity to touch and cold is present.
Nocturnal itching with vesicular or pustular lesions, often bleeding from scratching. Lesions are crusted and inflamed.
Eruptions and itching involve scalp, nape of the neck, and hairline, especially in chronic or recurrent cases. Warty or verrucous lesions may develop.
Chronic scabies with thick crusts, pustules, and slow-healing lesions. Indicated when secondary bacterial infection is present.
Children with intense itching around navel, buttocks, and scalp. Restlessness, irritability, and teeth grinding are common.
Itching is accompanied by burning and stinging eruptions, worse at night. Useful in thick, crusted lesions with tendency to oozing.
Chronic excoriated lesions with itching worse at night or during rest. Suitable for patients with sluggish metabolism and tendency to infections.
Itching with rapidly spreading pustular eruptions, moist, excoriated skin, and offensive discharge. Indicated when lesions are aggravated by warmth and night.
Scaly, dry eruptions with itching worse in the morning or from touch. Useful in patients with suppressed eruptions or tendency to dryness.
Sudden onset of red, hot, and swollen papules with intense itching. Aggravation from warmth and touch.
Excoriated lesions, burning pain, and intense itching after scratching. Useful in sensitive patients with irritated skin.
Mild but persistent itching with yellowish crusts. Lesions often change location; patient is tearful, clingy, and mild in temperament.
Chronic scabies with thick crusts, slow-healing lesions, and tendency for secondary infection. Helps in recovery of skin.
Pustular and excoriated eruptions with intense itching. Lesions may weep and thicken over time.
Itching worsens from touch or movement; lesions are red, crusted, and painful. Patient prefers rest and minimal movement.
Itching with excoriated eruptions, worse from warmth or at night. Useful in patients with digestive disturbances or constitutional tendencies.
Scabies is a highly pruritic and contagious skin condition. Homoeopathic treatment offers a safe, individualized approach, targeting both the physical manifestations and constitutional tendencies of the patient. Remedies such as Sulphur, Kali Sulph, Graphites, Rhus Tox, Arsenicum Album, Hepar Sulph, and others provide relief from itching, promote healing of lesions, prevent secondary infections, and reduce recurrence, while supporting overall skin health.
